Empowering islands in the shift to green hydrogen: key takeaways from a recent webinar

April 2025

Green Hysland initiated its Technical Support Programme on March 25, 2025, designed to assist islands in the development of green hydrogen projects. A recording and presentation slides from the launch event are now available.

On March 25, 2025, Green Hysland conducted an interactive online seminar to officially introduce its FREE Technical Support Programme, targeted at islands pursuing the creation of green hydrogen initiatives. The online event drew significant global participation, with over 70 attendees representing diverse locations such as French Polynesia, Puerto Rico, Tierra del Fuego, Madeira, Guadeloupe, and various regions of the UK. These participants demonstrated the widespread interest in adopting hydrogen-based solutions for island communities.

Christian Galletta, Project Officer at FEDARENE, opened the session with an overview of the Green Hysland project. This initiative, backed by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, is establishing a comprehensive green hydrogen ecosystem on the island of Mallorca. This ecosystem integrates solar-driven hydrogen production with refueling stations, injection into gas networks, and utilization by local users, including a port terminal, hotel, municipal building, and public transportation services.

Customized assistance for 10 islands

Enercy's Managing Director, Katharina Bouchaar, detailed the core components of the new program. Open to islands that are not yet part of Green Hysland, the program delivers no-cost, personalized technical assistance for the creation of pre-feasibility studies focused on hydrogen projects.

Participating islands will gain several benefits:

  • Access to the Hydrogen Territories Platform (HTP) tool
  • Up to three one-on-one mentoring sessions
  • Guidance on project design, collaborations, and funding strategies
  • A final report featuring feasibility insights and tailored recommendations

"This program furnishes customized technical aid, equipping islands with pre-feasibility assessments, mentorship, and guidance to cultivate their own green hydrogen project concepts, spanning from basic applications to intricate hydrogen ecosystems," explained Katharina Bouchaar of Enercy.

The program will concentrate on areas like local and maritime transport, buildings, tourism-related applications, and storage solutions. To be eligible, applicants must be situated within the EU or associated territories, have access to renewable energy sources, and become members of the Hydrogen Territories Platform.

Selection will be based on:

  • Clarity of the proposed hydrogen project idea
  • Existence of local partnerships
  • Availability of renewable energy
  • Location within the EU/OCT/OR
  • Alignment with broader sustainable energy plans

The application deadline is May 16, 2025, and the selected islands will participate in the program from September 2025 to February 2026.

HTP Tool Demonstration: A Chilean case study

Alberto Herranz from the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation (FHa) provided a demonstration of the HTP tool. This tool, developed using Python and Excel, is designed to simulate hydrogen value chains, encompassing production, transport, and end-use. It facilitates the modeling of technical performance, equipment sizing, and financial viability (CAPEX/OPEX), thereby aiding decision-makers in evaluating the feasibility of potential projects.

Ricardo Rodriguez of H2 Chile presented a live case study from Tierra del Fuego. This example showcased the island's significant 50,400 MW wind energy potential and its opportunity to pioneer decentralized green hydrogen development. The HTP tool was used to simulate scenarios integrating wind farms, combined heat and power (CHP) systems, and hydrogen mobility solutions.

Islands with an interest in obtaining this free technical support are encouraged to submit their expression of interest by May 16, 2025. Ten beneficiaries will be chosen by June, and they will receive personalized support starting in September.
