The Programme Review Report is looking at the activities and results of the Clean Hydrogen JU and how they align with the strategy and objectives set out in its founding Regulation and further elaborated in the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda.

The purpose of the periodic Programme Review is to ensure that the Clean Hydrogen JU Programme is aligned with the strategy and objectives set out in the SBA, further elaborated in its SRIA for 2021-2027.

This sixth edition of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership Awards was presented in Brussels on Wednesday, 22 November 2023, celebrates how European research and innovation continue to drive the clean energy revolution further and higher.

 

Best Innovation Award: emission-free aviation goes to HEAVEN

The winner, HEAVEN, represents the first application of liquid hydrogen storage technology in aviation. The innovation was integrated with a hydrogen-electric fuel cell propulsion system in a light demonstrator aircraft that seats up to four people.

The award was handed over to numerous representatives of the project consortium by Dr Bernd Biervert, Head of Clean Energy Transition Unit in DG Research & Innovation.

Rosalinde van der Vlies, Clean Planet Director, DG RTD, European Commission said:

“The HEAVEN project shows what European innovators can achieve by joining their forces. I wish to congratulate the winning team for their outstanding achievement. European H2 Valley of the Year goes to Green Hysland

Three hydrogen valley projects received this year’s award for their outstanding efforts to develop integrated systems of hydrogen production, supply, storage and use in multiple sectors: Hydrogen Hub Noord-HollandWIVA P&G in Austria, and Green Hysland on Mallorca, Spain.

Green Hysland aims to become Europe’s first hydrogen island and a blueprint for other areas in Europe. Its consortium of 30 partners from 11 countries is producing green hydrogen from solar energy.

“Together we are shaping a sustainable future, harnessing the power of clean hydrogen to propel us towards a greener and more resilient Europe,” said project coordinator Victor Encinas Sanchez.

“Thank you to the Clean Hydrogen Partnership for recognising our joint commitment to innovation and sustainability. Without the funding of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, this would not have happened,” he added.

The project’s pilot sites are a green hydrogen plant in Lloseta; a pressure-reducing station to inject hydrogen into the local gas grid; three fuel cell systems to provide heat and power to a sports centre in Lloseta, a hotel, and a ferry terminal in Palma; fuel-cell buses and a hydrogen refuelling station, along with distribution infrastructure.

Join the International Conference «Hydrogen Corridors in Europe»

Join the International Conference «Hydrogen Corridors in Europe», which will be held on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at 9.30 a.m., in the Conference Center of the Legnica Special Economic Zone.

The common goal of this event is to seek answers to the key question: how to prepare companies for this revolution and what does it really mean for entrepreneurs, local governments and the world of science?

The event will include two panel discussions. The first will deal with European initiatives on hydrogen in transport corridors and the second with national initiatives on hydrogen in road and river transport corridors. A discussion on the financing of hydrogen corridors is also planned.

During the conference, in addition to listening to expert presentations, participants will have the opportunity for one-on-one speed dating to effectively exchange contacts and establish new business relationships. Rotating tables, the so-called «mixer» for entrepreneurs will consist of 6 rounds of 20 minutes each.

Join the Hydrogen Valleys at European Hydrogen Week 2023

Join the Hydrogen Valleys at European Hydrogen Week 2023 in Brussels.

The Hydrogen Valleys will be represented by several of its members at European Hydrogen Week 2023 in Brussels from November 20-23, which is organized by the European Commission, the industry association Hydrogen Europe, and the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, the European Union’s public-private partnership.

More than 4,000 attendees will gather at Brussels Expo, Belgium’s largest exhibition center, to witness more than 180 exhibitors and over 200 speakers through two distinct conference streams:

(i) High Level Policy Conference – focusing on global and European hydrogen developments and featuring high-level policy makers, C-level industry representatives and experts from across the hydrogen value chain;

(ii) B2B Forum – where they can find new sources of inspiration, discover new knowledge and experience peer-to-peer exchanges. In total, more than 25 sessions will cover all elements of the hydrogen value chain to delve into all aspects of the sector’s trends, challenges and opportunities, innovation, new technologies, etc.

In 2023, the EU Hydrogen Research Days, integrated in the Hydrogen Week, will take place fully ONLINE on the 15 and 16 November.

During the EU Hydrogen Research Days, there will be a session dedicated to the European Hydrogen Valleys, where projects in which the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation participates with a different role will be presented.

The agenda of the event indicates that the Hydrogen Valleys will have their space during the first day of the event, on November 15 from 01:30p.m. to 3:15p.m.

Aragon shows in the European Week of Regions in Brussels its support to the “hydrogen valleys”.

The long trajectory in the research and development of hydrogen technologies and the commitment of the Aragonese Executive to maintain and promote the lines of work have been protagonists this morning of the European Week of Regions in Brussels. The Director General of Industrial Promotion and Innovation of the Government of Aragon, Mar Paños, has intervened in this conference, showing her support to the hydrogen valleys that allow “creating regional ecosystems in which the whole hydrogen value chain is present by grouping initiatives of production, storage and final use of this energy vector”.

In his presentation, Paños highlighted the trajectory of the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation, which brings together more than 90 companies, organizations and research centers in its board of trustees. He highlighted the Foundation full development of the fourth master plan, which ends in 2025 and contains a strategic line on these regional valleys. In addition, the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation is the only entity working in six different valleys funded by the European Union and the Spanish entity that has been awarded more projects of the main European funding program for hydrogen, the Hydrogen Technology Platform (Clean Hydrogen Partnership Joint Undertaking CH2JU).

North Adriatic Hydrogen Valley launches in PORTOROŽ

The long-awaited start of the North Adriatic Hydrogen Valley (NAHV) is here at last. The first transnational initiative of this kind under the Horizon Europe programme, supported by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, is being launched in Portorož-Portorose, Slovenia. More than 100 delegates representing 37 project partners from three countries, Croatia, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region in Italy, and Slovenia, will gather there for a project kick-off meeting.

 Beginning on 1st September 2023, the NAHV will run for 72 months. It includes 17 pilots to be developed in different locations in all three partner countries. The partnership, which has been awarded a grand of €25 million by Clean Hydrogen Partnership, and isled by HSE, Slovenia’s largest electricity producer and trader and the largest producer of electricity from renewable sources, includes 37 organisations: companies, universities, institutes and other public entities from the three participating countries. The project design covers the entire value chain of renewable hydrogen use, from production, through storage and distribution, to its end use in various sectors, notably industry and land and maritime transport, creating leverage to accelerate the transition to renewables on three target pillars: hard-to-abate industries, and the energy and transport sectors. These are the main reasons why the NAHV has received the Seal of Excellence, which is awarded under Horizon Europe to projects that have been highly rated.

The key aim of the initiative is to create a market for green hydrogen on both the demand and supply sides, making it a competitive energy source for the future. Key industry players from all three countries will develop pilot projects to produce up to 5,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year from renewable energy sources, destined for energy storage, distribution and use. It is expected that some 20% of the produced renewable hydrogen will be exchanged between the participating countries, thus creating a primary regional market for hydrogen. By introducing advanced hydrogen technologies and developing skills and infrastructure, the partnership also pursues other key objectives of the European Green Deal. In particular, the NAHV testbed projects address the decarbonisation of important industrial sectors such as steel, cement and glass production, and provides sustainable land and maritime transport solutions linked to reducing the carbon footprint.

It is expected that the implementation of the planned mature stage innovation activities will unleash further investments in renewable hydrogen-related technologies in an amount of more than €300 million, destined to increase the capacity of hydrogen production, storage, transmission and use. Additional investments are expected to be funded on top, both during the course of the project implementation and afterwards, from private and public sources in the form of follow-up investments in the successfully implemented pilots in 17 testbed locations across the three participating countries, as well as through new initiatives which will contribute to the evolution of a social and economic ecosystem based on renewable hydrogen. The foreseen development creates the need for new competencies and skills, which makes the universities and research institutions which are partners in the initiative important protagonists in designing and disseminating new educational programmes, as the NAHV is destined to become a vehicle for job creation.

Institutional representatives of the three constituent territories: Croatia, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Slovenia, respectively: State Secretary Ivo Milatić, Regional Councillor Pierpaolo Roberti on behalf of the President Massimiliano Fedriga, and State Secretary Tina Sersen, welcomed the participants of the NAHV Kick-off meeting in Portorož together with the CEO of HSE, the lead partner, dr. Tomaž Štokelj. Later in the day, they addressed the public at the press conference together with Antonio Aguilo Rullan of Clean Hydrogen Partnership Joint Undertaking.

The Kings of Spain and the Netherlands present the green hydrogen corridor between Algeciras and Rotterdam

he Kings of Spain and the Netherlands present the green hydrogen corridor between Algeciras and Rotterdam.

His Majesty King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands will visit the autonomous communities of Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia on Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 June in the morning. His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain will be present at some of the events on the programme. Mr Willem-Alexander will be accompanied by Rob Jetten, Minister for Climate and Energy.

On the 13th, during HM King Willem-Alexander’s stay at the Royal Botanical Garden in Madrid, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands will organise two meetings on the future of green hydrogen.

At 4 p.m. a symposium is scheduled under the title:

“The contribution of hydrogen valleys to the decarbonisation of Europe. Opportunities for Dutch-Spanish cooperation in the development of hydrogen valleys and sustainable aviation fuels”.

BalticSeaH2: A New Hydrogen Valley for a Sustainable Future

HELSINKI–(BUSINESS WIRE)–BalticSeaH2 builds the first significant, cross-border hydrogen valley in Europe. The goal is to create an integrated hydrogen economy around the Baltic Sea to enable self-sufficiency of energy and minimise carbon emissions from different industries. The project includes 40 partners from nine Baltic Sea area countries. Combining local areas into a broader valley supports creating an integrated, interregional hydrogen economy, which has not been done previously on this scale in Europe.

The area between Finland and Estonia is an optimal location for a cross-border hydrogen market. The necessary infrastructure – natural gas pipelines, electricity grids, and active marine traffic – already exist in the Gulf of Finland. The project will support the reduction of the carbon emissions from existing marine traffic. In addition, Gasgrid Finland is already preparing hydrogen infrastructure: Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor, Baltic Sea Hydrogen Collector and Nordic Hydrogen Route enable strong growth for hydrogen economy and hydrogen markets in the Baltic Sea region.

BalticSeaH2 projects enables 25 demonstration and investment cases to showcase the different sectors of hydrogen economy, adding up to over 4000 million euros in total investments. The production potential for hydrogen will reach 100 000 tonnes of hydrogen annually by the end of the project. The hydrogen and its derivatives can be utilised or sold by different industries brought together by the project.

ABB, for example, develops and demonstrates megawatt-class fuel cell solutions that enable emission-free maritime transport in collaboration with its partners. Another key objective at ABB is to optimize the interplay between the various sectors of the hydrogen valley and the entire value chain using digital platforms.

Finnish energy company Helen intends to produce green hydrogen with a PEM electrolyser. The first pilot plant should be running by 2024 and serve primarily heavy transport. Hydrogen can also be delivered to industry needs in containers. The faculty decreases carbon dioxide emissions in traffic and district heating production by 400 000 tonnes within the 20-year life cycle of the plant. With the hydrogen production pilot project, Helen can create necessary expertise and skills for widescale Power-to-X production needs.

Finland ambitiously targets carbon neutrality by 2035, supported by our significant wind power potential. Producing and refining clean hydrogen for industry use, transport, and into new products creates new export opportunities. BalticSeaH2 project has prerequisites to create a fast-growing clean hydrogen market to accelerate the development of hydrogen economy in the Baltic Sea region and the whole Europe.

The project starts in the beginning of June and lasts five years. The consortium includes 40 partners from nine Baltic Sea region countries: Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. The project and consortium were prepared by Finnish CLIC Innovation, who is also the project coordinator. Gasgrid Finland is a co-coordinator for the collaboration in the project. The total volume of the project is 33 million euro, with a 25 million funding from the EU. Clean Hydrogen Partnership supports European hydrogen valley projects with RePowerEU funding from the commission.

The Commission and key stakeholders signed a joint declaration highlighting the crucial role of sustained efforts in renewable hydrogen research and innovation.

Through this declaration, the Commission together with the European hydrogen industry, scientific community, and European regions, commit to stepping up and accelerating joint actions in research, development, demonstration, and deployment of Hydrogen Valleys. In line with the EU Hydrogen Strategy and contributing to the REPowerEU Plan and the Green Deal Industrial Plan objectives, these powerhouses connect hydrogen production, transportation, and a range of cutting-edge applications – from clean mobility to industrial feedstock – creating fully functional and sustainable clusters of supply and demand, advancing renewable hydrogen deployment and as a result driving forward the clean energy transition.

The joint declaration also calls for sustained investments, strengthening synergies between funding resources, sharing knowledge, stimulating the development of education and training for skills, and building regional hydrogen networks and interconnections between Hydrogen Valleys.

Based on this, we highlight the work of our partner, the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation, the only European entity that participates in 5 hydrogen valleys. This model is ideal for extending and showing that this technology brings together all the elements related to the production, storage, transport and end use of hydrogen in a single territory. Specifically, the Aragonese Foundation is participating in the hydrogen valley projects of BIG HIT (Scotland), Heavenn (Holland), Green Hysland (Balearic Islands), NAVH (Italy-Slovenia-Croatia) and SH2AMROCK (Ireland).
