EU Hydrogen Valley Days foster collaboration and highlight funding opportunities

Over 150 participants gathered for a productive day of discussions at the EU Hydrogen Valley Days, focusing on policy context and fostering collaboration within the European hydrogen valley community.

The opening session provided valuable insights into the policy landscape. Notably, 74 out of the 98 hydrogen valleys included in the Mission Innovation Hydrogen Valley Platform are European, highlighting the continent’s strong presence in this innovative sector.

A key takeaway from the day was the importance of maintaining communication and knowledge exchange among hydrogen valleys. This collaboration is crucial for fostering learning, accessing public funding, and ultimately accelerating the development of hydrogen technology.

Organizers expressed their gratitude to the day’s speakers and looked forward to the second day’s agenda, which will delve into financing, startups, the role of European industry, and the skills needed for a successful hydrogen future.

Day Two: Funding Opportunities and Industry Collaboration Take Center Stage

The EU Hydrogen Valley Days concluded with over 200 attendees actively participating in sessions shaping the future of European hydrogen valleys.

Key learnings from the second day focused on financing opportunities:

  • Matching Needs: While numerous funding opportunities exist, ensuring a good match between buyers and producers and increased flexibility in funding structures are crucial elements.
  • Investor Priorities: Investors expressed a preference for working with demonstrators, large-scale projects, and ventures with clear business viability for their initial investments.
  • Hydrogen Valleys: A Matchmaking Platform: Hydrogen valleys were identified as excellent platforms for connecting stakeholders and fostering collaboration.

The session on financing showcased experiences from hydrogen valleys across Europe, including Pays de la Loire, Groningen, Castilla-La Mancha, and North-West Germany. Discussions highlighted key challenges and suggestions, including:

  • Addressing Local Renewable Energy Shortfalls
  • Navigating Regulatory Issues
  • Leveraging Past Industry Experiences
  • Introducing Flexibility in European Funding to Attract Private Investors

The successful EU Hydrogen Valley Days, co-organised by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership and the European Commission – DG Research and Innovation, provided a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration building, and identifying opportunities for advancing the development of European hydrogen valleys. The insights gained will undoubtedly play a vital role in shaping a sustainable and hydrogen-powered future.

AdvancedH2Valley Project receives a €8.9 million grant from the EU to foster the Western France hydrogen transition

The 18 members of the AdvancedH2Valley consortium are proud to announce that their project has received an 8.9 million euros grant from the European Commission through the Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking, and its call HORIZON-JTI-CLEANH2-2023-1, to showcase advanced green hydrogen valley in Western France.

Based in the French Loire Valley, AdvancedH2Valley project aims to foster the Atlantic area’s energy transition and set the standard for clean, green, and renewable hydrogen. The Kick-off meeting occurred on 22-23 January 2024 in Nantes, France, with the participation of all consortium’s partners, coordinated by Lhyfe.

With secured funding from the EU – mainly dedicated to the uses and distribution of the hydrogen, AdvancedH2Valley unfolds across strategic locations in Western France. The project aims to introduce up to 11.5MW of new production capacities, in addition to the 1 MW pioneer unit already in operation, and innovative processes, including deploying one of the first hydrogen truck fleet in the country, H2 maritime applications, harbour logistics and hydrogen light commercial vehicles including taxis.

Among its ambitious objectives, the project envisions producing over 1 600 t/y of green and renewable hydrogen by 2028. Aligned with the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive, it establishes two new public Hydrogen Refueling Stations in addition to the 5 stations already in operation and a tailored supply chain, contributing significantly to the region’s sustainable energy goals and massification of the uses.

Beyond the environmental impact, AdvancedH2Valley seeks to be a catalyst for positive change, becoming an integral part of the local community, fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing among neighbouring regions.

The beneficiary members of the consortium are: Lhyfe (France, coordinator), EnR44 (France), Teréga Solutions (France), Hyliko (France), Département de Loire-Atlantique (France), SAS Terminal du Grand Ouest – TGO (France), Fraikin France (France), Zamenhof Exploitation (France), Hype (France), Fundacion Tecnalia Research & Innovation (Spain), Université D’Orleans (France), Université Bretagne Sud (France), Warrant Hub Spa (Italy), Automobile Club de l’Ouest (France).

The associated partners are: Région des Pays de la Loire (France), Angers Loire Métropole (France), Région Normandie (France), Conférence des Régions Périphériques Maritimes d’Europe (France).

Join the International Conference «Hydrogen Corridors in Europe»

Join the International Conference «Hydrogen Corridors in Europe», which will be held on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at 9.30 a.m., in the Conference Center of the Legnica Special Economic Zone.

The common goal of this event is to seek answers to the key question: how to prepare companies for this revolution and what does it really mean for entrepreneurs, local governments and the world of science?

The event will include two panel discussions. The first will deal with European initiatives on hydrogen in transport corridors and the second with national initiatives on hydrogen in road and river transport corridors. A discussion on the financing of hydrogen corridors is also planned.

During the conference, in addition to listening to expert presentations, participants will have the opportunity for one-on-one speed dating to effectively exchange contacts and establish new business relationships. Rotating tables, the so-called «mixer» for entrepreneurs will consist of 6 rounds of 20 minutes each.
